- You do not mention the ages of the students and what is cheap?
- One Small Square
It's fun to stake out a claim on one small square of land in a field and observe the life for a period of one hour. The students would take notes, draw pictures, write thoughts, even write poems about what they observe. There are some children's books to consider.

Also, observing the night sky is a lot of fun. And, if anyone has a telescope, it is basically free. Bring snacks, have some hot cocoa, even have a little fire.

Many locations have a sort of local semi-precious gem supply or gold panning area. Going on an expedition to a known site is fun and educational.

Search for and identify local wild flowers when in bloom.
Visit a local business and take the tour.
Watch a craftsman work.
Help with a local conservation project.
Oh, here's a fun one, help with an archaeological dig.
Have fun. Let the kids pull together ideas before you go and enjoy the day!
