Last Minute Trip To Mexico - Can I survive on 2500 pesos?
My visa in China can't be renewed (stupid olympics policy change) so I've decided to go to Mexico one year earlier than I planned. Problem is I haven't been saving for it and now I have my ticket I'll be landing with 2500 pesos roughly. I'm very experienced at hitchhiking around the world (minus latin america) and plan to use couchsurfing on my journey to La Paz or Cancun (undecided). At either of which destination I plan to teach english privately. What I need to know is if I can travel and live for at least a month safely on this amount of money (obviously avoiding expensive expenses).

- yeah but not for a long time.
- Yikes.
You can, but u might run out of it soon =\
good luck and have fun =]
- I'll answer in a different way:
cigarettes- 25pesos
1 beer - 10 pesos
Can of coke - 7 pesos
Average meal - 25 pesos
Bus fare - 5 pesos
You will get a 6 month tourist visa when you arrive. To work legally you will need an FM3 card. You must apply for this visa before the 6 months ends. Do not lose your card. The employer will have to write a letter and furnish proof that he could not find a Mexican to do the job.
Figure out if first of all the $$ is do able - youll be tight my friend.
Second the FM3 card is nearly impossible to get - seriously.Unemployment is the norm here and no boss wants to get wrapped up in your immigration issues.Pay will be on average 100 pesos a day - $10 usd.
Hitchiking here would be extremly dangerous . Extreme !!!
You mentioned teaching privately - well , keep in mind thier pay is low and hence yours will be too. Cancun I call gringoville do to the tourist invasion. Alot of the locals there speak english as they need it to make a living.
Your asperations are high. I'd think it over
- Another way to look at it...
A typical construction worker, such as a bricklayer's helper, makes that in about 2 weeks and they sure don't live well on it, even without paying rent or traveling.
As for La Paz or Cancun, you picked two of the most expensive areas in the country. If you are really determined to do it, I would get on the net fast and try and find some work for when you arrive.
Best of luck.
- maybe for a day or two
- Yes but not many time.
- for whole year??? sure if you stop eating
- Highly unlikely. Check couchsurfing in Baja. Be careful sleeping in parks and on beaches, you could get robbed or go to jail. Mexico isn't the bargain paradise it 30 years ago.
