Where are some cool places to take day trips from Tokyo?
I'll be staying in Tokyo, but want to take a couple of day trips or overnight trips. I'm thinking Kyoto and Osaka would be fun, but have no idea. Any help would be great. I want to go somewhere that will be fun to drink and party, but also a good cultural experience.

- well kyoto and osaka... i wouldnt call them "day" trips! but if you have time they are great places to visit! but i think you need a couple of days there... maybe 2 nights?...
BUT i would recommend Kamakura... it is right outside of tokyo and lots to see! it is an old ancient capital~ so lot of historical sites, temples, shrines, big buddha, GREAT food (try the sweet potato ice cream... sounds gross but i love it), etc...
yokohama is also a great place... lots to do and see and only about 30mins away... they have the beach, china town, tall buildings (LandMark Tower) etc.
- Osaka and Kyoto are definitely NOT "DAY" trips from Tokyo, they deserve a trip of their own.
Depending on time of year you will be going.
If you want to drink and party continue to stay in Tokyo.
If you want to see cultural historical prospective of Japan, visit Nikko to the North of Tokyo, or Hakone. I recommend staying overnight at least once in these places and if you don't mind going to an Onsen, it is an experience.
- As the first person mentioned Kyoto and Osaka are definately overnight trips in fact you might have to take an overnight bus unless you have a Rail Pass for the bullet train and even that's 3 hours.
Daytrips would be Kamakura which is only about an hour from Tokyo. There are quite a few temples and shrine starting from Kita-Kamakura (North Kamakura). There's a 2km walking path that winds through the hills to the Great Buddha. You get some great views of the area and the sea and you pass a shrine that you reach through a tunnel.
Hakone could be done in a day but it would be better for overnight to give you a chance to go around and enjoy the countryside and views.
Nikko is also overnight as it takes 2 hours to get to and you'll want to walk around. Mountain scenery and ornate shrines - it's a beautiful area and one of my favorites. However, it's dead at night so not much partying to be had there.
A daytrip I might suggest for a taste of old Japan is Boso no Mura. This area near Narita city. Take the Joban Line to Narita and get off at the stop before. A 2km walk thru countryside will take to a recreated town street that used to exist more than a hundred years ago before Japan opened up to the West. They also have old farm houses and a samurai house where they will teach you how to put on samurai armor. In the area there's a small musuem on the ancient burial mounds also in the area.
