I am looking for good ideas for day trips in Scotland in July for me and my partner. Any ideas?
We are looking for some nice places to visit and some fun things to do which aren't too far away from Glasgow/Edinburgh this July. We don't want place which are going to cost us a fortune. If anyone has any good suggestion from places they have been i would be extremely grateful. Many thanks

- Loch Lomond, not far from Glasgow
- Get a boat from Largs to the Isle of Cumbrae - only 10 minutes across the water. It's like going back to the 1950s. Lovely beaches on the west side, Millport is a sedate and very sweet town.
- seriously consider the slightly longer rail trip to Inverness, a beautiful city right next to Loch Ness. A great romantic day out.
Enjoy
- a hike in the highlands of scotland is beautiful. I especially liked Fort William and the Eilean Donan Castle.
- West Central Scotland and the Glasgow area are ugly and industrial. The Highlands and Islands are too far away. To the South East of Edinburgh, the village of Dirleton and the seaside town of North Berwick are beautiful. To the West, Linlithgow with its Palace and Lake is well worth a visit. Over the Forth in Fife, St Andrews is fabulous and the coastal fishing villages such as Crail, Anstruther and Elie are would make a great day out.
- Anywhere in the Highlands is going to be gorgeous. However, I would always recommend Loch Ness as one previous answerer said. It is well worth taking a boat trip out on the Loch for Nessie hunting. There are boats which go from Inverness and also from Fort Augustus and both boats give a good tour and running commentary. A bit touristy but good fun nonetheless! The "Royal Scot" which runs from Fort Augustus even has a Nessie painted on the windows below decks and if you take your photo correctly, it can look as if Nessie is swimming alongside the boat! Fort Augustus is a lovely place in it's own right and has a very interesting lock flight on the Caledonian Canal and you can sit and have a pub lunch whilst watching the boats go up and down the locks. Further down the road there is Drumnadrochit which is near where I live. Here is the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition where you can spend a happy afternoon (useful to know this if it rains as you will be indoors.) There is also Urquhart Castle which is fascinating and lovely to look at and interesting to visit. Meals are available there too I believe.
May I suggest that you contact visitScotland.com who are the best people to help you really.
I do so hope you enjoy your time up here but would recommend that you come by car in order to get full value from your day out. It will mean an early start though, but worth it.
- Congrats for selecting Scotland. A really beautiful place to visit that time of the year, i have heard. Even i am planning to take my hubby there later in the year, mebbe Sep. I suggest u check out Tafri on how to reach to Scotland. You will get great deals on hotels, airlines etc. Will save you a lot of money. Being a homemaker, i am more worried about saving money. I discovered Tafri on yahoo answers only. This is a free download from www.mytafri.com. This tool is jus like ur MSN or Yahoo messenger. It aggregates best of the deals from all the suppliers and web sites and bring them right on ur desktop. u dont have to visit countless web pages and get confused. The deals that are published on Tafri are authentic and very economical for sure. My hubby uses this tool a lot as he has to travel frequently.
- why not have a day out in dublin or something like that. you can get cheap flights to dublin from edinburgh(cheaper than the train ticket to inverness)spend the day there then fly back that night.
