How much spending money should I need for a trip to NYC?

I'm planning on taking a 10-day trip to NYC in exactly one year. How much money would I need to save besides plane and hostel costs? I'm not much of a shopper, I'd mostly do the museums and that kind of stuff. Also, any tips for saving money on my trip?

Public Comments

  1. All of it.
  2. Around $600
  3. I am from there but moved away a few years ago, my girlfriend and I went back for a few days and brought $1000 and we did the sightseeing deal and some shopping since she's never been there and even still we came home with money. For 10 days though, I'd say at least $1000.
  4. always take 5k to 10k pocket money
  5. ummm i heard it was pretty expensive to be out there so you should save some muuuula! saving tips?: i don't have any but good luck on your trip to the big city!
  6. Depends were you will be going.

You should bring at least 15000

    to have a good time.
  7. NYC is all about money.... unless you want to walk everywhere... which isnt too bad, but you'll need a taxi at some point... id say bring about 700 bucks... I dont know if you are going alone or what, but you will need to eat and if you want to splurge on dinner you'll need some cash on ya.... also if you want to go see a play or go to some kind of museum... all of that costs money.. china town... ull love china town.. id go there and buy anything you awn there... bargain with them and everything... that way you'll save money, but all in all you are going to spending at least 700... but i think to safe id save like 1000 if not more!!!!
  8. Ride the subway, but never alone.

    Don't carry cash.

Spend time planning your meals. Dining in NYC is expensive.
  9. funny thing about new york is that you can spend alot of money and have nothing to show for it.

    transportation

subway - cheapest, $2 a hit, or get a pair of 7 day passes $24 (unlimited use)

taxi's - kinda sorta better, avg ride $20

    museums

they all say suggested donation but seriously avg $10

    going out - dinner

decent places start at $15 per entree

    going out - clubbing

    east/west village $5 to enter

in general up to $20 to enter

    drinks

start at $5 (even for beer)

    hmmm. did i miss anything?

    fyi, movies cost $10.75
  10. If you have three meals a day at a neiborhood deli or diner, be prepared to spend about $35 dollars, give or take depending on what you eat; this would be for a regular meal each time, not including tip. To save money, buy most of your food to have at your hostel; luncheon meat, bread, soup, breakfast bars, etc.

Museums, etc., I suggest that you get a book with attractions that you may want to see contained in it; a AAA book, for example. This will have listings of all types of things, and usually prices for admission, etc.

Transpotation, use the subway and buses. Buy the day passes, it will save you time and money. Taxis can be expensive.

Use a credit card if you can so you do not have too much cash on you, or use travellers checks.

If you wish to see a Broadway show, try to get your tickets at the "ticket booth" in the middle of Times Square, you can usually get them 1/2 price.

    I would estimate about $100 a day.

I would do these things to plan your costs beforehand, and base it better on what you want to do. Hope this helps.
  11. A lot - it's expensive to park, to go through toll booths, to shop & to eat out. NYC thinks very highly of their amenities. Probably $300 spending money would be sufficient, not including plane or hostel.
  12. a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    a lot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    lol
  13. 10,000 bucks and if you dont spend it all please deposit it to my savings...
  14. the best way to save $$ is to walk. It is also the best way to see the city (Manhattan) I mean listen you will have to cab it to some places but walk if you can. Also don't be afraid to stop, sit and just people watch, its free and you'd be surprised how time flies and what you will see.

Think about this you are going for 10 days, if you take $1,000.00 that only how much per day? NY is expensive especially if you are going to tourist attractions. You could pay upwards of 25.00 for a t-shirt at some of these places, seriously.
  15. 5000 min.
  16. you should have at least $1000 but its up to u. It all depends on what you are planing on doing. shopping =200-500

tours=100 swimming parks=20 a hotel room =300-900 a night email me if u use my advise.......................
  17. A lot and then some more
  18. A LOT
  19. For 10 days, I'd say bring about $1000. That way you have money for the sights, museums, etc. You can also buy day or week passes for the subway. It's a bit confusing at first, but once you have a subway map, it gets easy. It's the only way I got around the city. Taking the subway saves you a ton of money on transportation!!
  20. a lot. at least $1000 just to be safe.
  21. I would say about 5000 maybe a couple extra grand just to be on the safe side. Things can get expensive there.
  22. I went to NYC last year and i took about a thousand dollars because i went shopping like everyday but if ur going to see Broadway shows that is a very good amount cause the tickets are pretty expensive but just in case take at least 1,000 dollars N-E-Ways if u don't spend it all u can still save it but it is mostly ur choice. I LOVED NEW YORK it is soooo much fun there is something to do everyday soo have fun and good luck!! :^)
  23. Well, figure a small amount of shopping, eating everday, parking/cab costs, museum/event tickets, nightlife:

    $40/day food x 10 days

    $25/ticket x 7 days (need a few relaxing days)

    $40/day cab fair x 10 days

    $200 souvenirs

    $40/night bars x 4(asuming you're not a wino)

    --------------------------

    $1335

    $ 135 appx. 10% error margin

    --------------------------

    --------------------------

    $1470

This number will be fairly safe assuming plane and lodging are separate, and you will be doing these types of activities.
  24. I would take as much as I could possibly save. Put it on a Visa/Mastercard that way there you can't lose it and if you don't spend it all, you will still have it.
  25. 5k-6k
  26. when i went to N.Y last year, i spent more than expected on food, so allow plenty of budget for that! talk 2 guides on tour buses. i found them very helpful!
  27. depending on where you eat. 700 - 1300
  28. A whole lot of money.
  29. pper day : hotel=200 3 meals =100 transportation =60 entry tickets 60 ,total per day= 420 then i think for ten days 4200 $ plus 1000 pocket money &sovoneir,shopping average between 6-7 grants will be fine
  30. you should save up $1000.00
  31. even to snizz in NYC you need money, a lot! try to get somebody to stay with, even a reletive cause even crapy hostel costs a lot in the city, it's the most expensive real estate remember! if you do get a hotel, try research first on the internet, some hotels have weekly rates so it's a little cheaper!

some museoms have one day a week when it's free admittion, try to find out when that is and go only on that day.

    good luck and have fun!!!

    (:
  32. you at least need $600 dollars because i live in NYC and trust me its not cheap because when i go shopping and to museums and i spend a lot of money okay so be prepared and I'm in college so i spend a lot of money lol
  33. WOW 10-day Trip? Thats gonna be ALOT gosh.. firstly don't get a hotel within the city - look online for special hotel things.. and well.. wow.. 10-days
  34. you need to bring a wholelot !!!
  35. you might need about 100 dollars. Have fun.
  36. about 1000
  37. Oh, 500 dollars or so.
  38. Well if it's in one year then you have more than enough time to save and prepare. I'd have say . . . probably about $1500. Money goes a lot faster than think when your in some place your not used to, and I'd say that it's a pretty safe bet that museums up there are also a lot more expensive than in other places.

To save money? Cut corners. A LOT. Instead of buying like a candy bar or some alcohal or soda's, don't. Save that money and put it towards your trip. It may not seem like much, but a little bit counts and adds up, especially in a years time.

Another tip: While your up there, gaurd your money well, or you'll probably get pick-pocketed in places like the subway, metro and other busy places! ><""" If someone bumps into you then they could have done it on purpose to pick your pocket. ;) Be safe, also.
  39. For just one person? Well i went to a trip to NYC and spent about 200 but I was with my school, but for you, around..

    100 for transportation

    300 for buying

    400 for entering theatre.. etc

and money for hotel or rent or something.

So around 1500 in my opinion, and just to be sure.

Tips: if its something that you can get in your home city. Why buy the more expensive one and you even have to carry it back. Also, don't buy something that seems too over priced and over the top.

---Have fun on your trip =D .. NYC is the best .. best of luck.
  40. Hi,

I used to live in New York, so I think I would be of great help. All the places to eat are pretty expensive, so make sure during the day you just grab a few bits here and there with little local pizza places. But at night you should definelty experience the night time dining. Time Square usually has the best places to go eat, just walk around and you'll find a tons of restaurants. (Since i am not really sure of what you like to eat, I can't really advise you). The musium are usually arounf 20$, so count up how much you would actually want to visit. There is a free fary that goed to Staten Island and back, it's a great view and it's money saver!!!

I would probably tell you to approximetly take $60-100 for each day that you will spend there.

If you have any more quastion, feel free to email me.
  41. New York's a great city because it has a wide assortment of entertainment options, from the very cheap to the very expensive. This goes for restaurants as well.

check out New York citysearch, it'll show you the options available to you based on budget, neighborhood, interest, etc.
  42. I would take at least $600. You need to enjoy yourself a little, by eating out once in a while, and going to some clubs. It sucks to go to New York, and be poor. Although that can be done too.
  43. All I can say is take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. Its free and it gives you breathtaking views of the city itself, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and just the New York Harbor itself. You don't have to pay anything, take the ride back and forth. Its one of the best 30 min back and forth you'll spend!
  44. i would probably say about $1000 for the trip, and a hotel room for 600 dollars a week, and for shopping and taxis about $1000. that is all in my opinion. cuz ive never been to new york.
  45. Its not to much to do the city thing... your best bet is to walk around, or get a 7day metro card. Taxis are expensive. Muesems are generaly $20 a pop, unless your a student... bring your Student ID for a big discount.
  46. 3500
  47. ALOTTTTTTTTTTTTT OF IT!! i live here so i know!
  48. i think 1000$ to 2500$ is enough
  49. It all depends on what part of NYC you go to and if your a big spender. If you are a big spender you may want to bring around $1000.
  50. I would say 900 or 1000 dollars.
