What are some day trips to take this summer in the lower hudson valley of NY?

We have 2 kids both under 11. Each year we go to Disney and its getting a little "old". Instead of a "family trip" my hubby wants to take a few day trips this summer.(or even a long weekend). We are pretty close to the Jersey border and very close to Manhattan. We also wouldn't mind traveling upstate a bit. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might interest us and especially the kids?

1. My brother lives in the area and talks alot about the finger lakes region. He says there is all sorts of outdoor recreational stuff to do there, including wineries for the adults. He likes to ride horses, jetski, boating, camping, etc...
